About Giving Institute: Leading Consultants to Nonprofits

Member - Giving Institute

The Giving Institute, formerly the American Association of Fundraising Counsel (AAFRC), sought to enhance the professionalism of a field that was disorganized and sometimes misunderstood and mistrusted. Their first act was to develop a fair practice code. The code, known today as the Standards of Practice and Professional Code of Ethics, is widely accepted as a model for professional ethics in the field.

Since 1935, the Giving Institute and its member firms have embraced and embodied the core values of ethics, excellence, and leadership in advancing philanthropy. Serving clients of every size and purpose, from local institutions to international organizations, Giving Institute member firms embrace the highest ethical standards and maintain a strict code of fair practices.

MISSION: To educate and engage members in the ethical delivery of counsel and related services to non-profits through research, advocacy, and best practices.

VISION: To develop extraordinary leaders in the world of philanthropy.

PURPOSE: Giving Institute provides shared experiences for executives of member firms who can become leaders in philanthropy.

Beyond this original mission to promote the evolution of the professional fundraising field, the Association's other commitment—promoting philanthropy—has also expanded through the years. Giving USA was first published as a public service in 1955.

About Giving USA Foundation™

Advancing the research, education and public understanding of philanthropy is the mission of the Giving USA Foundation, founded in 1985 by the Giving Institute.

Headquartered in Glenview, IL, the Foundation publishes data and trends about charitable giving through its seminal publication, Giving USA, and quarterly newsletters on topics related to philanthropy. Prior to the formation of the Foundation, Giving USA was published directly through the auspices of the AAFRC. The book has documented who gives what to whom for more than 50 years.

Giving USA 2008: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2007, available in both soft-cover and electronic versions.

Giving USA Presentation on CD: GIVING USA 2007 Presentation on CD is a PowerPoint® slide presentation of the key data from GIVING USA. Presented in color, bar, pie, and area charts clearly illustrate giving patterns by source and type of recipient. Each chart has an accompanying slide with bulleted text to highlight key trends. GIVING USA on CD is designed to be a ready-made computerized presentation that can be used to educate your board, staff or clients. Individual graphs can also be incorporated into your own presentations and reports.

Giving USA Quarterly e-Newsletter: Four times a year, Giving USA Spotlight brings you research about current trends in philanthropy and practical information that complements the data in the annual GIVING USA edition.
